— The Assassin Order motto

A series of third-person historical action-adventure games developed and published by Ubisoft, the Assassin's Creed franchise follows the adventures of Desmond Miles as he stumbles into the truth of the series alternate history- where every event that has ever transpired in the course of human existence has been shaped by two warring factions: The Assassins, who fight for freedom, and The Templars, who fight for order. While the main narrative of the series is set in the present, the majority of each game is set following a completely different plot- that of one of Desmond's ancestors from time periods such as The Crusades, the Italian Renaissance or the Revolutionary War. Desmond accesses the memories of these ancestors in a device known as The Animus, which allows him to relive their memories. Each of his playable ancestors were members of the Assassins, and through them, Desmond begins to unravel the nature of numerous ancient artifacts, the Pieces of Eden, the secret true history of mankind, and the identity of the precursor race that existed on Earth long before Man.
