Batman: Arkham Origins: Blackgate is a handheld Batman: Arkham game developed by Armature Stuido, previously known for porting the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection to the Playstation Vita, and formed from talent from the Metroid Prime teams at Retro. The game was crafted to be a metroidvania set in it's own place on the timeline, rather than be a downport of the console release of Batman: Arkham Origins. The game was released for the Playstation Vita and the Nintendo 3DS on October 25, 2013, as a companion piece to the PC, Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 release of Arkham Origins.
A Metroidvania, Arkham Origins: Blackgate is a 2.5D platforming action-adventure game with an emphasis on combat and exploration of the open environment, finding items to proceed further through the gameworld to advance the story. Features native to the Arkham console games were adapted where possible by Armature: while Batman can't jump normally in the game, he can use the grapnel gun to access higher points of elevation. The player will access numerous familiar gadgets- the Batarangs, the Bat Claw and the Explosive Gel, which is now fired as a projectile, all return among others.
As the 2.5D nature of the game prevents the iconic Freeflow Combat of the Arkham console games from being replicated exactly, Armature attempts to replicate it by building a new Freeflow system from the ground up, incorporating the use of the background and foreground which Batman will freely move between in order to strike at foes moving in from his left and right.
Another major returning but revamped feature is the Detective Vision. Originally used to observe areas in the environment that can be used in Silent Predator encounters, search for clues and detect enemy numbers and conditions, Detective Mode now allows Batman to see the line of sight of his enemies to keep him in the shadows. As Batman draws more attention from nearby enemies, he changes color in Detective Vision as a visual indicator. Like before, Batman is able to make use of floor grates, silent takedowns, collapsible walls, glide kicks and vantage points can be used to deal with enemies in Silent Predator encounters.
The nature of the game is inherently open- players can fight the bosses in any order they chose, dynamically changing the outcome of the story based on how they chose to progress through the game. Additionally, players will unlock various batsuits with statistical differences during the course of Blackgate, changing their abilities and skills.
Three months after the events of Arkham Origins, a mysterious explosion devastates Gotham's Blackgate Prison, allowing notorious criminals The Joker, Black Mask and The Penguin to take control, splitting it into three districts. Working with young police captain, James Gordon, Batman must delve into the prison, battling super villains and gangs alike to restore order.
