— The Narrator

Fallout is a classic Western Role-Playing Game series created by Black Isle Studios and published by Interplay, and a spiritual successor to Interplay's classic Wasteland series, and helmed by Tim Cain. The series began with 1997's Fallout: A Post Nuclear Role-Playing Game to immediate critical and commercial success. As Interplay's financial troubles escalated, the series was shopped out to multiple other teams for spin-offs in multiple other genres- including a Tactics Strategy game, a third-person console shooter, and plans for a canceled MMO.

The franchise was revived when the rights to the name were purchased by Bethesda Softworks, who developed and published Fallout 3, a new title largely divorced from the setting and characters of the original series. The remnants of the original team, now a stand-alone team named Obsidian Entertainment, were contracted out to create another title in the series, and released Fallout: New Vegas as a direct follow up to the first two games. After a controversy with payment over the performance of New Vegas, Bethesda has retained exclusive control of the series- releasing the controversial releases Fallout 4 and Fallout 76.

A spiritual successor to the series, created by Obsidian, The Outer Worlds was launched in 2019.
