...I chose the impossible. I chose... Rapture. A city where the artist would not fear the censor. Where the scientist would not be bound by petty morality. Where the great would not be constrained by the small. And with the sweat of your brow, Rapture can become your city as well.
— Andrew Ryan

Rapture is an undersea utopian city, founded by Andrew Ryan to avoid the political, social and religious anxieties of a post-World War II world. It was established on November 5, 1946 and finished in late 1951. The city of Rapture is the setting of the games BioShock, and it's sequel, BioShock 2.

The city, however, "was betrayed by the weak.", and a Civil War broke out on New Year's Eve, 1959. The Rapture Civil War marked the demise and fall of the city, with few sane humans remaining, crazed Splicers and the protecting Big Daddies took up most of the population.

BioShock InfiniteEdit

The Welcome to Rapture Center has a small appearance in BioShock Infinite as the place of death of Songbird. After traveling to the Rapture Lighthouse, Elizibeth reveals to Booker that Lighthouses are doors to other worlds, full of "constants and variables." Upon further examination of this phrase it can be surmised that Rapture and Columbia are reflections of the same world.

Non-Canon HistoryEdit

Playstation All-StarsEdit

While Rapture does not appear as a stage, it briefly appears in the Big Daddy's opening cutscene, where it and the Little Sister stumble upon an exit out of Rapture, and decide to investigate it, and ending cutscene, where the Little Sister and Big Daddy return after defeating the other challengers, like Sackboy, Big Daddy's rival, and the one who started the game, Polygon Man. The Little Sister apologizes for her treatment of the Big Daddy, and they continue walking through Rapture.
