Super Smash. Brothers is a party-fighting game series developed by HAL Laboratories and Project Sora. The first Super Smash Bros. was introduced as a sleeper-hit on the Nintendo 64 in Japan in 1999, selling over a million copies. The game was followed up by Super Smash Bros. Melee two years later on the Nintendo GameCube. The game featured 26 characters, of which 15 are available initially, more than doubling the number of characters in its predecessor. New game modes and collectible trophies were also introduced. The third game in the franchise was released seven years later, titled Super Smash Bros. Brawl, having a roster of 35 playable characters, a story mode, All-Star mode, and Online play. An untitled fourth game is currently in development for the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, and will be shown at E3 2013.
